Jewelry Art Collaboration Project #2

For the past number of months my jewelry co-lab group, Simone Richmond, Su Foster and I have been holding meetings in the park and on the Art Gallery Patio..... We've been commissioned to do our second collaborative project of the year.  In the spring we were asked by the talented musician Debi Wong to make a piece for her to wear when her music ensemble, White Sparrow performed at the Visual Space gallery.  While we were there for the performance we met the owner of the gallery, photographer Yukiko Onley.  Yukiko mentioned she had a friend who might be interested in working with us.  We met with Yukiko and her friend Yayoi Hirano.  Yayoi is a Japanese mime artist, and is the director of the Yayoi Theatre Movement Society.  They are performing the story of Medea in November at the Orpheum Annex theatre and she asked us to make bold neck pieces for her to wear during this performance.

Yayoi is also a very talented mask maker, she hand carves all of the masks which are worn for their performances and she hand makes all of the elaborate costumes.  When we met with her to discuss the project she showed us her beautiful costumes and masks.  She tried them on for us so we could take photos for reference and she gave us a sampling of what her performance is like.  She chanted, Noh chanting, which is a traditional Japanese chanting that is somewhat eerie and incredibly beautiful.  We sat in this small open gallery space and listened and watched, we were mesmerized.  I felt so honoured to be living the life I get to live in that moment.  It was a very intimate and soul stirring moment.

The three of us left that meeting very excited to be a part of this project.  We are making a series of 3 neck pieces.  They are almost finished and they are pretty amazing.  Here are some photos of our meetings, sketches, and the initial design work...

Some final decisions on our 3 swirly pieces....well sort of final, they still changed a lot from this design, but after this meeting we moved from pen and paper to metal...

How much fun are these swirly shapes?!  I can't wait to show you what we've done with them.
